Methodology
Source. Form 13F holdings reports (13F-HR) filed with the SEC by institutional investment managers with at least $100 million in qualifying US securities, as collected in Signal8's dataset. Report periods start with the first quarter of 2023. Each quarter is checked against the SEC's own filing index: the number of 13F holdings reports Signal8 holds for the quarter in which they were filed is compared with the SEC's count. A quarter where Signal8 holds less than 98% is marked as not fully collected and no figures are stated for it.
Filers. Managers with an original 13F holdings report for the period. Amendments do not add a filer. Notices filed by a manager whose holdings are reported by another manager (13F-NT) are not counted.
Deadline and timing. A 13F is due 45 days after the end of the quarter, or the next business day when that falls on a weekend or holiday. A manager's filing date is the US Eastern date the SEC accepted its first 13F holdings report for the period. "The last 3 business days" means the deadline day and the two business days before it. The SEC treats a filing submitted after 5:30 p.m. Eastern as filed the next business day, and that rule is not applied here, so the share filed after the deadline can understate. The SEC can grant extensions and confidential treatment, so a filing after the deadline is a fact about timing only. A quarter is shown as final seven days after its deadline.
Securities. The number of managers whose 13F lists a position in the security, counted by CUSIP, with options positions left out. A restated report replaces the original. The increase and decrease tables compare the latest final quarter with the quarter before it, when both were fully collected, count only securities reported by at least 100 managers in both, and leave out changes of half or more of the prior count, which in the data come from mergers, spin-offs and ticker changes rather than from managers' reports. A count of managers is not a count of shares or dollars.
Not included. Total reported value is not published: managers that share investment discretion can each report the same position, and a few filings state values in the wrong units, so any sum overstates by an unknown amount. Performance of the securities managers hold is not reported.
