Watchlists on Signal8 and How They Connect to Alerts
How Signal8's watchlist works, where the watch buttons are, how the watchlist and alerts are the same list, and how the Terminal's watchlist rail differs.

The short version
On Signal8, your watchlist and your alerts are the same list. Adding a company, insider, institution or politician to your watchlist creates an alert subscription for it, and the watchlist address takes you straight to the alerts page where that list is managed. There is one watchlist per account, stored on Signal8's servers, so it follows you across browsers and the mobile app.
The Signal8 Terminal has a separate watchlist rail. It is a quick symbol switcher kept in your browser, not your account watchlist, and it does not send alerts. This guide covers both and how to keep them straight.
Where the watch buttons are
You can add to your watchlist from most research pages without visiting the alerts page:
| Where | Control | What it opens |
|---|---|---|
| Company page | Bell icon at the end of the tab row | Alert preferences popover |
| Insider, institution and politician pages | Add to watchlist button | Alert preferences popover |
| Terminal identity line | Watchlist button beside the symbol | Alert preferences popover |
| Alerts page | Add button on each tab | Search, then preferences |
Once an entity is on your list, its button reads On your watchlist, so you can tell at a glance whether you already track it.
The preferences popover
The popover is where you choose what you want to hear about for that one entity. For a company the toggles are:
- Press Releases
- Dilution / Prospectus
- 10-K / 10-Q
- 8-K Material Events
- M&A Filings
- Ownership (13D/G)
- Proxy Statements
For an insider the toggles are Trade activity and Filings (their Form 4 trades and other ownership filings). For an institution they are 13F filings and Position changes (from quarterly 13F reports). Press Save (or Add to watchlist the first time) and a confirmation appears. You can change these later from the same popover or from the toggle pills on the alerts page; they are the same setting.
Watchlist limits
Because each watched entity is an alert, your watchlist follows the alert limits:
| Plan | Entities you can watch |
|---|---|
| Free | 3 |
| Signal8 Pro | Unlimited |
Trying to add a fourth entity on a free account opens a prompt to upgrade to Pro ($59 a month or $588 a year). Anything already on your list stays there. Viewing research pages never requires a watchlist slot; the limit applies only to entities you subscribe to.
Delivery
Watching an entity makes its events appear in the app. To get them by email, browser or mobile push, or Telegram, switch on at least one delivery channel in your account's notification settings and save. The alerts guide walks through those settings and the full list of forms each category covers.
The Terminal watchlist rail
The Signal8 Terminal has a Watchlist rail on its left side, with Symbol, Last and Chg columns and an Add symbol to watchlist button. Clicking a symbol loads it into every Terminal panel at once.
This rail is a different thing from your account watchlist. The Terminal's identity line shows both side by side on purpose: a star adds the symbol to the local rail, while the watchlist button opens the same alert preferences as the company page.
| Account watchlist | Terminal watchlist rail | |
|---|---|---|
| Stored | On Signal8's servers, per account | In your browser, per device |
| Holds | Companies, insiders, institutions, politicians | Ticker symbols only |
| Sends alerts | Yes, by category | No |
| Counts toward plan limit | Yes | No |
| Access | Free account | Part of Signal8 Pro |
So adding a ticker to the Terminal rail does not subscribe you to its filings, and watching a company on its company page does not put it in the Terminal rail. If you clear your browser storage or switch computers, the Terminal rail starts from its default list again, while your account watchlist is unaffected.
Keeping your watchlist useful
- Be selective with categories. A company with every toggle on can generate dozens of notifications a year. Turning on only the categories you act on keeps the signal readable.
- Watch people as well as companies. Following an insider catches their trades in every company they are an insider of, not just the one you found them through.
- Review the list occasionally. On a free account each slot matters; remove entities you no longer follow from the alerts page.
How to use watchlists on Signal8
- Open your list at the watchlist, which redirects to the alerts page.
- Add a company from its page, for example the bell on AAPL.
- For a fast symbol switcher while monitoring, use the Terminal rail: open AAPL in the Terminal.
FAQ
Is the Signal8 watchlist the same as alerts?
Yes. Every entity on your watchlist is an alert subscription with its own event categories, and the watchlist address opens the alerts page. Watching something and setting an alert on it are the same action. Notifications reach you outside the app only if you have turned on a delivery channel.
Can I have more than one watchlist?
Not for alerts. Each account has one watchlist, organized into tabs for companies, insiders, institutions and politicians. The Terminal's watchlist rail is a separate list of symbols kept in your browser, which you can arrange independently, but it does not send alerts.
Why did a ticker I added in the Terminal not show up on my watchlist?
The Terminal rail and the account watchlist are separate. The rail is a symbol switcher stored in your browser; the account watchlist lives on Signal8's servers and drives alerts. To get alerts for that company, add it from its company page or from the alerts page.
How many companies can I watch for free?
A free account can watch three entities in total, counting companies, insiders, institutions and politicians together. Signal8 Pro removes the limit. Research pages stay viewable regardless of how many entities you watch.
